What is a Sealant?

A dental sealant is a plastic resin that’s bonded to the chewing surfaces of the molars. This is an important preventive dentistry treatment because the molars’ chewing surfaces are actually the most likely place where a child will get a cavity. These are such cavity-prone areas because the chewing surfaces have grooves where food particles can get trapped inside. When food is stuck against the tooth enamel, tooth decay can develop over time. Sealants are applied to these areas in order to smooth the grooves out and prevent food from getting stuck against a tooth.

How Are Sealants Applied?

The sealant procedure is a simple process that’s entirely painless and completed in one visit. To begin the procedure, your Amarillo pediatric dentist will thoroughly clean and prepare the molars before painting sealant on the intended tooth. Some sealants are actually bright pink when wet, which helps the dentist make sure that all of the pits and fissures have been coated. When every part has been thoroughly coated, the sealant will either be left to self-harden or it’s exposed to blue spectrum natural light for several seconds. This specialized light will harden the sealant and cure the plastic, leaving a clear (or white) layer of thin, durable sealant.

Benefits of Sealants

Sealants provide many advantages for patients who have them applied, including the following:

  • Sealants will give you more defense against tooth decay.
  • The tooth surfaces that contain sealants will be less likely to contain plaque.
  • Brushing your teeth will become easier.
  • Sealants can provide protection for around three to five years, though they can sometimes last much longer.
